An Advocate for Our Partners – Corporate Development at Redeux Energy

By Ilan Caplan, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development, Redeux Energy

Ilan Caplan is a seasoned energy executive with over 25 years of industry experience in development, finance, and operations with a particular focus on renewable energy, having executed over 2.0 GW of solar and wind projects representing over $2bn in value.

Redeux Energy’s Corporate Development team serves as an internal advocate for our commercial partners, ensuring that each of our development projects meet or exceed market standards. With decades of operating and financing experience among the team in both traditional and renewable energy, we understand the high expectations of long-term asset owners. That approach differentiates our team and is the calling card for our work at Redeux bringing utility-scale PV Solar, hybrid and stand-alone battery energy storage development projects to the market. You’ll see us at the industry’s leading conferences, meeting with counterparties to discuss our upcoming portfolio sales and partnership opportunities.

A Systematic Approach to Development

Redeux Energy has developed and implemented processes, systems and tools that harness the art of clean energy project development together with the rigor and methodology of stage-gate project management. We apply this approach from market selection through POI targeting, site identification and ultimately through mid-stage development activities including grid interconnection, site title and curative, facility design and permitting.

We focus on the front-end activities of project origination and feasibility risk reduction within the development lifecycle, transferring mid-stage risks to our partners who complete the balance of development scope. Our mission is to site projects with high locational value, mitigate key early-stage risks, and advance projects in the interconnection queue.  We create clean energy project portfolios that are attractive acquisitions because they meet or exceed the high standards of long-term asset owners.

Portfolios Built with Partners in Mind

While Redeux develops our projects with the long-term owner in mind, we work to find the right partners who will find the greatest value in our portfolios. Not every project meets the criteria of every IPP or Utility, so we optimize our sales process to line up the right projects with the right partners.  We understand what makes our assets unique in each energy market and then match them with partners for whom there is the highest value.

At Redeux, we prefer to have deep relationships with our partners, even if it means we have fewer of them. We seek to have a full understanding of their marketplace, execution, and future business plans. We use this information to inform our development teams about optimal current and future site selection, planning for projects that have CODs three to five years in the future.

We negotiate each asset sale with our partners with a view toward closing future deals with them, working not as competitors, but as an extension of our partner’s development teams. As our relationships develop further, we seek to understand the nuances of our partners’ business objectives to formulate strategic alliances that result in curated project portfolios in specific target markets.

To further compile our portfolio, Redeux selectively considers acquisitions of well-sited land positions in our target markets. Corporate Development is positioned to review, assess and negotiate any potential project acquisition by employing the collective experience of our team alongside the insight of the land, development and technical teams here at Redeux.

Transparency Above All

Underpinning our approach to developing deep and lasting relationships with our partners is our commitment to transparency at Redeux. Not only amongst ourselves internally, but with our partners in regard to our assets, our work, and how we approach development de-risking. While we focus on project sales, at the end of the day, upfront, honest, and direct conversations are key elements of our success.

We pride ourselves on being as transparent as possible for not just our development partners, but also for our landowners, consultants, investors and other developers. Transparency builds trust, which builds meaningful and successful partnerships for years to come. Working together, we can deploy valuable, high-quality assets that will serve our communities for decades.
